Valentine’s Day permits me mixed emotions on this widely celebrated holiday, even here in Zambia.

i. I’m single and a bit lonesome

ii. My grandma Betty Jane passed on this very holiday seven years ago

iii. It’s nearing the anniversary of my precious cousin Kylee Jane who passed two years ago

iv. Love is in the air all around me, and I’m not feeling it

v. Many will receive cards, gifts and sweets from their sweethearts even here in Africa

… But WHERE is my share for all the affection? I will show you…

These precious neighbor kids are the wind beneath my wings and provide me with amusement, enjoyment and delight.

One of these boys (third from left) is a Bemba, by tribe and we take pleasure in speaking ichi-Bemba to one another [one of the 76 Bantu languages in Zambia]. After all, I do not speak the local languages (Tonga, Nanja, Lozi) like the two (shown with me below). In spite of everything, the three of us still manage to communicate and find a way to express our feelings to one another daily. They both coming running for hugs where I spin them round and round as well as lots of, “HOW ARE YOU?” “HOW ARE YOU?” “HOW ARE YOU?”… The only common English phrase in all of Zambia.

My little sweethearts will simply get sweeter as my camaraderie with them grown and our time playing and buying gumballs each week carry on.

Thank you God for providing not just ONE sweetheart but MANY!

AFRICA APPRECIATION

Birthdays can come and go, but the celebration itself can imprint something within your mind that is hard to shake.

January 23 was not only a time of festivities and amusement but also a time to witness the “knife-man” Birthday traditions of the Livingstone-YWAM base.

The “knife man” ties a traditional African fabric around his waist and dances slowly but surely to the beat of African music with the cake knife in his hand until passing the knife into the hands of the birthday guy/girl to proceed with cutting the cake. Following the knife-man was a sting of amusing dancers with broomsticks; wanna be break-dance moves and the like. Surely, the memories themselves will reach far into the future as I carry on with further birthday blessings.

Jesus was Homeless

Rejected by his family.

Accused of Being a Drunkard,

and Thought to be Crazy.

Walked from town to town,

spending time with people out on the streets,

Was criticized for Associating with poor and dirty people.

Often in trouble with the authorities,

He occasionally got run out of town.

Knew what it was to be

Hungry, Thirsty and Tired.

If HE himself felt such rejection and faced so many trials, why do we think ourselves to be un-worthy of heartache, disappointments, and frustrations in life? The bible is full of countless first hand accounts assuring us as CHRIST-followers that we too will face such obstacles in our journey of life.

Like Himself, we have the Holy Spirit to overflow in our lives and provide PEACE which passes our understand, JOY in the midst of fire, PATIENCE and the like… EMBRACE the FRUIT of His Spirit in your life and welcome the complications in life.

Look at two of the stories God wrote; There's Shadrach, Meshach, and Abendigo, who get rescued only after they're thrown into the fiery furnace. Then God shows up.

He lets a mob kill Jesus, bury him.. then he shows up.

Do you know why God loves writing such incredible stories?

Because he loves to come through.

He loves to show us that he has what It takes.

Once more, I’ve become a school girl at the age of 31. They call me a DTS [Discipleship Training School] student living in the dorms with YWAM in Livingstone, Zambia. This initial six-month [DTS] school (preceding my next course, Birth Attendant School for High Risk Midwifery) motto is “KNOW God and MAKE Him KNOW”. It is missionary driven, as we (Christ followers) are ALL called to join the labors for a harvest of souls.

Throughout these three weeks I’ve been here, I am learning that we are always students for Jesus, always. His ways are not our ways…. And old thinking pattern processes die hard.

I’m the oldest of five students in my DTS course, and the only non-Zambian (although another American is with us for a few weeks.) Our daily schedule is rigid and runs according to the western standards of time keeping, (not BMT, Black Man Time as we call it here).

All sixteen of us (multiple schools function at the same time) live together in one small four bedroom house. Soon our head count will be 20 when we move into our new base/home/school being built near-by. However, according to American standards no one would dare move in under the current condition, yet (we are Africans) so we’ll shift as soon as the floor is completed and work on the rest as time allows.

Our current and future base/house is located a few kilometers from the heart of downtown Livingstone and only 3KM from one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World, Victoria Falls.

We sleep in dorm rooms, expect the married staff, and I was promoted to the bottom bunk bed near my birthday. Hip Hip Hooray! Climbing into a ‘high’ bunk with no ladder was a challenge or maybe my age (31) has hindered my agility?

This being the first time since 2008 that I’ve actually slept on/in a bed in Zambia, so dorm rooms and bunk beds make me feel like royalty here compared to the hard cold floor.

Our classroom also serves as the sitting room (family room), office, dining room, study hall, computer lab, TV/Movie room, freezer storage and more. Why waist space? They even granted me one shelf to myself for storage and that is more than I’ve had many times past.

We are privileged (currently but not following our move) to enjoy indoor plumbing (most of the time) and electricity. At times I wonder how there could ever be a shortage with one of the largest rivers in Africa and THE Largest Falls in the world-wide just down the road which could generate electricity and provide water for many nations, yet many times, we live without. Welcome to ZAMBIA and the lack of resources to make such things come to life.

And, for the very first time while living in Zambia, I have a bathtub to take indoor ‘bucket baths in’ and an actual toilet (which needs a bucket to flush it) with a portable ‘seat’ not just the porcelain frame to make living 5-STARS! Internet is technically here, but very limited. We’re not able to use a flash drive/USB drive or my own computer, hence the delay in this update as I’m paying at an Internet café.

My weekly schedule (for those who care) looks something like this:

Monday- Friday:

04:00 Alarm wakes for quiet time/ bible reading prayer (where I sit by candle light on the toilet, since it’s still lights out)
06:00 Take a walk while singing praise songs to Jesus
07:00 Class Intersession Prayer for friends, family, world and Devine Appointments
08:00 Breakfast
08:30- 13:00 Lecture, different speaks come/go…
13:00 Lunch
14:00-16:00 Study, book reports, Journal preparation
16:00 Turn in homework
17:00-18:30 Free time (wash clothes, by hand- I go running and play with neighborhood kids, cleaning…)
19:00 Supper0
20:0-21:30 I’m on supper clean up, which takes FOREVER!!!
22:00 Lights out

Tuesday: (the only difference is)

14:00- 16:00 We work at our new plot where we’ll be shifting soon… clearing the land, planting, fixing proper windows, digging, and “slashing” mowing the ‘bush’ by hand with a single handmade tool that you swing to-from to cut the glass with the small (double-sided) blade.

18:00-19:00 BASE Worship, Every student and staff come for a time to sing and Pray together.

Wednesday: (the only difference is)

07:00 BASE Intersession (everyone joins for prayer)

Thursday: (the only difference is)

14:00-16:00 Student Meeting to discuss what we have learned for the week, etc…

Friday, Saturday, Sunday Free to study, complete assignments, do outreach with your local church, attend youth groups etc.. UNLESS we are on the weekend team (usually groups of 4). We’re expected to do ALL the CLEANING, COOKING, PREPARING etc… it leaves you VERY weak and weary by the end.

In two months from now my class will complete the lecture phase (KNOWING GOD) and start three months of “outreach” to (MAKING GOD KNOWN). We’ll live among the villages etc.. And come along side another Christian organization and join their efforts.

The Holy Spirit has reached to the deepest depth of my being to find that mold-able lump of clay, which He precedes to view as hopeful. Once more, He has started to pound and shape my spirit into the woman of God He created me to become for this time and season. His attempt to finish what He began in-between my distractions and sinful pursuits of the past keeps me moving forward. This body made of dust and stains is once again running the race among the African culture and people groups doing my part to live out “The Call” which lies before each Christian, Know Jesus and Make Him Known.

In the midst of this community/school I am found living in, I’m reminded one too many times of my setbacks, upset plans and failures to become an example of Jesus to the developing world of Africa prior to permitting loneliness and lust to send me on a downward spiral.

Overtaken by the memories of my weakness and loss of our son can leave me motionless with fear that I’ll fail again… Until I feel Him push and mold these broken parts into a His plan, which only He can.

Forgiveness and redemption has come, I now stand blameless through the blood of Jesus and through His longing to make beauty from ashes I’m able to step up to the plate and allow Him to FINISH WHAT HE BEGAN!

Thank Jesus that he is the Potter and I am the clay! He has reached for the deepest hope in me and called out for the things of eternity. I know He will finish that what He began, as I see Him doing just that with each passing day.

Masai, Muslim and Missionary

Common ground can be hard to come by when journeying from nation to nation. In spite of that, I was able to establish a smidgen commonality between two Masai, a Muslim and myself.

Throughout my nineteen day, expedition from the states to Zambia the White Masai novel stole my spare travel time. I managed to view the film (English subtitles) via You Tube some months back and devoured the book in less than two days, a miraculous record if you knew my track record for reading ;)

For as long as I can remember avid readers consistently told me that I too will become a bookworm after locating ‘the right book’, and that I did.Corinne Hofmann's life story hit home more than once, yet other aspects of her love story were far from my own realities and kept me holding tight to each page of each book, as she has written three regarding the same story line.

Masai Tribes occupy much of the Kenya, Tanzania bush lands. They are known to be a nomadic tribe, which rear cattle and goats, while their diet is based on animal blood, milk and meat from the livestock and chai tea. Gardens are not a common practice and tiny dome huts are constructed with twigs and cow dung. Even to the average African, Masai Warriors are respected and placed in a league of their own.

My bus booked from Kenya to Tanzania dropped me for the night in a tiny town across the border. My eyes were glued to the window of the bus awaiting another sighting of Masai along the countryside. Sure as luck would have it, the Masai were in the town of Abusha as well. My courage and boldness hid in the shadow of my fear for their response when asking for a ‘proper’ photo. I walked to and from the alleys of the town and throughout the open-air markets while gawking at their craft booths, shoes made of old tires and bold red and blue shuka's. The awe of such a people group can leave one speechless.

No sooner did I book my lodging I ran into a younger Muslim girl who greeted me with perfect English verse the Swahili that I’d become accustomed to. I offered to buy her some fresh fruit from the local street vendors and in no time we were on foot, strolling around the congested streets. My gazing eyes spoke for themselves as she took note of my fascination with the Masai’s. She was perplexed to hear that we don’t have such a tribe in Zambia and took it upon herself to approach a couple Masai for a photo. I was had been well informed from my ‘reading’ that a bribe of some kind is a requirement for such a Kodak moment. My frugal tendencies were nowhere to be found and I was willing to pay a high price for such an encounter. Johari located a Jeanie and lamp for me to wish upon and I found myself paying very little for a one-on-one photo. (In the cloak of the night with a poor quality camera, my frugal ways don’t always pay off)

My courageous spirit was regaining its strength when I took the chance to invite the Masai to join Johari and myself to round of traditional Chia and Chipati, my treat. Much to my surprise, they accepted and guided us to the local tea-house for a late night treat! Johari was the interpreter as each one of us had many of questions for each other. They told stories about chasing lions and fighting the big-five water buffalo's as well as other fascinating near death stories to explain the scars on their body. Before long, a pair of grandmothers came to join us and was more than willing to offer ‘free’ photos. I did not have to think twice. I was lost in a dreamy Masai world.

Time seemed to stand still until Johari reminded me her mother and cousins were waiting back at the hostile. My 4:00 bus departure was far from my own worries or concern. However, we exchanged a number of farewell hugs and wished one another well before they escorted us back to our side of town for a night of sweet dreams and stories that will last a lifetime. I even managed to come away with a traditional Masai shuka to back up the stories and photographs.

Moral of the story: Dreams DO come true and books can come to life ;)

Bitter Sweet- Farewell

My big Brother, (oldest), Me (last born), Papa, Mama, Big Sis (second born)

The hugs and kisses this week from family were not taken for granted; rather they have become the wind beneath my wings. They have lifted my spirit when I did not think I could move forward. They have sewn shut the gap of feeling lost and alone. They have enabled me to embark on another journey far from home as I have known it. I stand with courage as each kiss and each hug was an omen for this new chapter in life.

Life has a funny way of making time creep by, yet in a blink of the eye, it can empower one to move at the speed of light. In the past week, I have lived both sides of the coin. My great God has provided me with a heart transplant. This ‘new’ heart beats for the weak, the lost and those still in the darkness of Sin and knowledge of their Savior. The ‘new’ heart of mine desires to live among a dirty diseased and despaired community of people and leaves me home sick when I am far away from them, they are the moments when life seems to tiptoe by. On the other hand, life seems to pass like a vapor when I am holding close to my own family and saying, “See you later”, one more time. Bitter sweet.

Days have passed since I departed the comfort of the family I was born to, the home I’ve been comforted in and the arms of those who have known me the longest.

Each of my nieces and nephews were slumbering in the cloak of the night when I inched my way into the room with stealth motions. I found them snuggled under blankets one by one and shed tears over each one as I offered a prayer to the Living God on their behalf. I kissed each one of their feet buried under the blankets and asked Jesus to “Never leave of forsake them, rather to Guide their feet with precision as they follow the still small voice of His Spirit.”

My sister and I parted ways in the midst of the public eye. All I could do is swallow my pride, thrust my hands over my face, and weep for all to see as I stood alone in the room after her departure. I didn’t care what others may think, I simply wanted to memorize her face, her embrace and most of all words of encouragement, “Keisha, we are so proud of you. This is not goodbye, but sees you later. We WILL meet again.”

I decided to crank up the radio on my voyage to the house. Praise is to Jesus that he sent just the right song at the best time, Chris Tomlin “I will rise”.

Mark 8: 36-37 “What good is it for a man to gain the whole world, yet forfeit his soul? Or what can a man give in exchange for his soul?” – All that I could possibly achieve or acquire (on my own) in this life is worthless, if I am willing to forfeit my soul=eternal life with Jesus.

Mama bid me farewell at the airport and said, “Your bags are packed, and now it is time for you to help pack others suitcases.” Maybe I can explain. For as many years as I can remember on my childhood birthday cards mama and papa would tell me they have done their best to pack my ‘suitcase needed for life’ with all the; KNOWLEDGE of Jesus, FORGIVENESS for others, COURAGE to follow Him, BOLDNESS to stand for our Living God, PEACE that passes understanding, PATIENCE to wait upon the Lord, LOVE for my enemies, COMPASSION for the weak, …. They would explain to me that I ultimately am a Child of God, but He has allowed them to ‘adopt me’ for a time and season to help mentor and guide me into bringing Him more glory. They would further explain that if they were to fail in any areas, HE would be there to unpack and repack my ‘suitcase for life’, so when I reach my destination I can pull out all I need; KNOWLEDGE, FORGIVENESS, COURAGE, BOLDNESS, PEACE, PATIENCE, LOVE, COMPASSION… to complete the task that await me.

Decmeber Update

Christmas has managed to come and go once again, in the blink of an eye though it seems. I hope each one of you was reminded of the REASON for this very season, CHRISTmas!

I was officially accepted into the [Y.W.A.M. -Youth With a Mission] –D.T.S [Discipleship Training School] in Livingstone, Zambia, Africa beginning January 15, 2012. This DTS (in Zambia) is a prerequisite school for the B.A.S. [Birth Attendant School] where I hope to attend their High risk midwifery school in July 2012.

*** I’ll provide the condensed time-line first, for those who like it simple and few details ;)

** Dec 2011 - I'm going to Europe on a SPACE-AVAILABLE buddy pass plane ticket (CHEAP $$) Visiting friends as I travel via train throughout Europe
** Jan 6, 2012 - Flying from Amsterdam to Nairobi, Kenya to visit more native friends on my way back to Zambia
** Jan 12, 2012 - Travel by bus and train from Kenya into Livingstone, Zambia where I'll complete (six months- Bible/Missionary training) of a 1.5 year High Risk Midwifery School (with YWAM)
** July 2012 - Leave Africa for Perth, Australia to continue the High Risk BAS School
** Oct 2012 Complete the remaining 8 months [BAS] hands-on clinical in multiple developing countries with my team

** July 2013 I will use my 'return ticket' from Perth to Africa where I 'HOPE' to someday set up a medical/maternity clinic in the bush of Africa- possibly in Eastern Africa... where there are Numerous Unreached People Groups

Youth With a Mission (YWAM) is one of the world largest mission’s organizations with over 18 000 full time staff in more than 100 countries in every continent (except Antarctica).

While attending a 5 Month [DTS], Christian Missionary Training School I’ll be challenged to worship, listen to and head the voice of God. I’ll be housed in the dorm at the base, with my fellow classmates. This base is equip with running water, electricity and even Internet J … There is a first for everything, even in Africa. J

While a student at the Birth Attendant School I’ll learn about pregnancy, labor and delivery, newborn care and postnatal care, which is a powerful tool in reaching the nations for Christ. I’ll spend eight months with my team in clinical studying throughout developing lands one-on-one with local/native health care professionals each day. Past teams have been to India, Indonesia, Nepal, Sudan and Egypt, Cameroon to name just a few.

Frequent QUESTIONS/ Answers:

Is this the same country in Africa you have lived in? Yes. Zambia is where I have lived the longest in Africa.

Will you be living in the same area/village? No. I will be 380 miles from the former area/village Kitwe. In Africa that trip can take 12+hours from Point A (to) B.

Will they speak the same language? No. Zambia has over 76 dialects and BEMBA is what I have spoken times past, now I’ll be among the Tonga tribe, Tonga dialect.

Will you see former friends from Kitwe? Yes. I plan to travel there at least once to pick up all my belongings which dear friends are storing for me.

Will your DTS OUTREACH phase be in Zambia or other nations? They typically travel to Botswana for Outreach, but we’ll remain in Zambia for our three months of outreach.

Where do you plan to live when you have completed the entire 1.5 years of YWAM schooling? Of course I feel called (currently) to Africa, but I’ll go to any nation (including America) IF that is where the Lord leads me. However, I have felt more and more than I’ll end up in East Africa among the many “un-reached people groups”.

Where is Perth, the BAS school location? Western Australia (the not-so-visited side of Australia.. more dessert and less attractions)

How many classmates will attend (my) DTS in Africa? I’m guessing approximately five students, but that number is simply a guess

How many fellow students will attend (my) BAS School in Perth? Currently they have 17 on their team, but that too can vary from class to class

When will (I) come back to visit the states? I have no plans just now simply because the ticket prices are SO expensive from Africa. I’ll wait for God to make a way, which he has before with free flight via flyer miles- let me know if you wanna donate yours ;)

How do you fund your school fees? My income/savings over the past year+ will contribute to most of my school fees. However, YWAM is a “Faith Based” fundraising organization, which means we (students or staff) gain financial support from friends, family and the like. I will send out ‘prayer/financial’ support letter for the eight month outreach phase of the BAS program when the time comes.

What does my family think of such a journey? My immediate family couldn’t be more supportive. My father and sister and brother-in-law have taken part in International Missions. My mom dreams of it (I pray that a day will come that she’ll join me on the field and teach me more Midwife skills as she was an Labor and Delivery Nurse for 17years). My entire family believes ALL are called to ‘go into ALL nations to share Jesus’. Sure we’ll miss one another, but I haven’t found anywhere in the Bible where we are commanded to remain ‘relaxed in our own comfort/safety zone’… have you?

Robin, you provide life, hope and a future to woman who would otherwise lay dead and helpless. You provide anticipation for myself and the journey that is yet to begin. You provide a way where there seems to be no way in the depths of developing lands and beyond. You Robin, are a true HERO and one that deserves recognition both now and years to come.

I GOT A PACKAGE THIS WEEK FROM MY BIG SIS IN PREPARATION OF MY MOVE TO AFRICA AND OF COURSE, I CRIED... I MISS MY FAMILY ALREADY. THE TEARFUL FLOOD GATES OPENED ONCE MORE AND I BECAME A BIT FRUSTRATED WITH MY LORD (FOR GIVING ME A HEART TRANSPLANT WHICH I DIDN'T ASK FOR 5.5 YEARS AGO WHEN THIS NEW COURSE IN LIFE TOOK ROOT.

NONETHELESS, I KNOW I AM HOMESICK FOR DEVELOPING LANDS WHERE HE (JESUS) HAS TAKEN MY HEART, (MY NEW HEART THAT HE GAVE ME). A PLACE THAT I WOULD NEVER EVER CHOOSE TO LIVE (WITH MY RUN OF THE MILL HEART). YET A PLACE WHERE I CONNECT WITH A RICH CULTURE AND FEEL COURAGEOUS FROM WITHIN WHILE SERVING AMONG THE NATIONS…

I CAN BECOME BOTHERED WITH SO MANY WHO THINK I "CHOOSE" THIS FOR MY LIFE. THEY SEEM TO THINK THIS ADVENTURE IS UP MY ALLEY AND SOMETHING I THRIVE ON. NO WAY! WHY WOULD ANYONE CHOOSE SUCH A DESTINY? ONLY A FOOL. YET GOD HAS MOLDED ME INTO THAT FOOL FOR HIS GLORY. MY (NEW HEART) REQUESTS SUCH A ‘HOME’. MY (FORMER) HEART IS GONE AND HE'S GIVEN ME A NEW PASSION AND FOUNDATION TO PLACE MY FEET UPON, ONE THAT REQUIRES HARD WORK, LITTLE REWARD AND HIGH EXPECTATIONS OF THOSE AROUND ME... ONE THAT ALLOWS MY (NEW) HEART TO BEAT TO THE AFRICAN DRUMS AND JOIN THE RACE SET BEFORE ME WITH ENDURANCE AS HE BECOMES MY STRENGTH WHERE I AM WEAK AND THE FORTRESS THAT I SEEK, HERE OR THERE.

IN A MATTER OF HOURS, I WILL BE PLUCKED UP AND SHIFTED TO A DISEASED, RAT INFESTED,DUSTY DIRTY, BUCKET-BATH COMFORT OF A CULTURE IN ZAMBIA AFRICA, ALL THE WHILE FEELING AT "HOME" THERE. HOW DOES THIS WORK, YOU ASK, SIMPLY BECAUSE THE HOLY SPIRIT LIVING WITHIN ME BEACONS ME TO GIVE UP MY DREAMS TO FOLLOW MY DESTINY IN CHRIST JESUS.

AS LONG AS I MAINTAIN MY FOCUS ON HIM, THEN SUPERNATURALLY GOD WILL TAKE AWAY MY SADNESS, WHILE REPLACE MY LONELINESS WITH MORE OF HIM AND ALLOW ME TO JUMP IN WITH TWO FEET AND NOT LOOK BACK ON MY ‘DREAMS’ AMONG THE SELF-CENTERED CULTURE I WAS RAISED WITHIN.

CURRENTLY I'M STILL SPINNING ROUND AND ROUND AND NOT REALLY UP FOR THE TASK THAT LIES BEFORE ME. IT IS DAUNTING. IT BEATS FEAR INTO ME. IT ALLOWS ME TO FEEL TINY AND UNWORTHY OF SUCH DUTIES ON MY OWN STRENGTH. NEVERTHELESS, IN THE VERY NEAR FUTURE GOD WILL RAISE ME UP AND ALLOW ME THE CHANCE TO BE A VOICE TO THOSE WHO HAVE NO VOICE AS HE IS MY STRENGTH WHEN I AM WEAK.

2 CORINTHIANS 12:9 TELLS US (JESUS CHRIST) SAID, “MY GRACE IS ALL YOU NEED. MY POWER WORKS BEST IN WEAKNESS.” SO NOW I AM GLAD TO BOAST ABOUT MY WEAKNESSES, SO THAT THE POWER OF CHRIST CAN WORK THROUGH ME. HE IS OUR STRENGTH WHEN WE ARE WEAK.

THEREFORE, I'LL GO! AS I KNOW IT IS BETTER TO LOOSE MY LIFE [LIVING FOR MYSELF ALONE] THAN TO WAIST IT ON THAT WHICH IN NOT THE DESTINY OF MY LORD AND SAVIOR.

I’ll continue my soapbox series from prior posts where I preach “Your MISSION FIELD is outside your bedroom window, NO matter where you live.” You see there is NEEDS within in reach, most of which are lying at our very feet. Many NEEDS become common to overlook. Many NEEDS seem too complex. Many NEEDS dare steal too much of our precious time. Many NEEDS push us to the ends of our rope allowing risk to swallow us up and spit us out before we even take a step toward the NEED. Yet ‘they' are, waiting, for US to SEE the NEED and SEAL it with our exclusive touch, sole attention, and irreplaceable time.

Seven fleeting days grow to become another common American Holiday, Thanksgiving! Praise the Lord our Government still deems “THANKSGIVING” a National Holiday. This in mind, I challenge each of you to find a way to SEE a NEED and SEAL it with the ACTION you’ll take. Spare us the proposal of a ‘To-Do List’ where you simply SEE it, SEAL it, and cross it off your list as though it’s a burden. Rather make it a chance to not only SEAL a moment in time, rather a chance to invest in a LIFE . I dare you to take the risk and give you life and love away to those in your corner of the world.

Sunshine through Gloom

My intentions were to embark across the Atlantic Ocean this week to a place I call home. Ticket in hand. Luggage jammed tight. Boiled or grilled cassava root already causing my mouth water. Sunscreen easy to reach as “hot season” is striking with a vengeance. Cold bucket baths adorn this time of year. Snacks and necessities for fellow Missionaries wedged in. Discipleship and Follow-up with widows in two regions remained a chief focus as well as aid for two former NGO’s (prior volunteer work years past) would consume a great deal of time. Ice blocks (homemade flavored ice) and mango's (in season) no doubt would have become my staple diet. Dancing, dreaming, Praying and Playing with all the brown eyed children near and far would no doubt exhaust my daily source of energy. Overflowing Joy rarely seems to wear off leaving me in my prime as I rest my head and body on a cool floor day after day.

…That was then, this is now, assembled stateside with Ma and Pa and my dear African friend nearby. Some would say she and I met by chance, we however know it was another divine appointment from the Lord. Her residence in Ohio has amounted to a couple of short months yet her string of unfortunate circumstances seems to flow nonstop. So Ma, Pa and myself reached out, moved her in and called her family while we are united together for a time such as this.

Needless to say, God has brought a priceless piece of AFRICA to me, instead of taking me to Africa this month. In the time leading up to my departure Jesus kept whispering in my ear Matthew 18:12 "What do you think? If a man owns a hundred sheep, and one of them wanders away, will he not leave the ninety-nine on the hills and go to look for the one that wandered off? It took me a bit to catch on, and then it hit me… He was calling me to leave the crowd of African widows behind (intrusting them to Him) and nudging me to follow after my African sister in the Lord who was placed in my hands to encourage, support, and love like family!

Sure, I am still a bit homesick for a place and people group that I call ‘home’, still I can see the sun breaking through the gloom and providing another means of ministry and opportunity to give and take and bloom and blossom right here, right now.

WHY not HERE - WHY not NOW ??

Elizabeth and Josh bundled under sheets, cardboard and layers of clothes while sleeping during rush hour in Downtown Dayton, Ohio USA - enduring a 46 degree cool late October morning.

"I'm going to take my family to Africa someday to teach my children how grateful they should be for all I give them here in America."

… The words on numerous parents lips as they hear me tell a story or two of the impoverished realities back ‘home’ in Africa. Each time leaving me, a bit perplexed as to why someone would say such a thing. How can a parent who is leading and guiding the hearts of innocent children be so… selfish? I realize they mean well, yet how has Satan blinded the hearts and minds of the Americans so well. How has he slipped in convincing us that we deserve all we have and if we are thankful for what we have been given, we will simply be given more?

Unfortunate as it may, the selfish expectation don't stop with those outside the walls of a church. Even pastors have taken to the very lie and preach ‘Health, Wealth and Prosperity’ behind their own pulpits. As if, the Bible tells us to live a life of luxury, comfort and status. I ask them; show me where the Bible instructs us to live in constant coziness, sheltering our children from the ‘other side of the fence’.

Maybe I’m the fool that believes our purpose as ‘Christ followers’ is to set off in our own backyards or over yonder when God calls us into other nations and LIVE a LIFE of JESUS in word and deed for their profit, and not our own.

Romans 10:14-15

HOW, then, can they call on the one they have not believed in? And HOW can they believe in the one of whom they have not heard?

And HOW can they hear without someone preaching to them?

And HOW can they preach unless they are sent? As it is written, “How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news!”

Who are ‘they’… People like me and you as well as the poor and downtrodden in each community and nation, including America.

The commanded is to ALL nations. So why is it so easy to turn our backs on those in need in our own western nation? Why won’t parents take their children to a local food bank, or homeless shelter to remind their children of who needs a piece of what we have been given Spiritually and Physically? The “Least of these” are outside out bedroom window silently begging for a little of Jesus’ love and even a scrap form our dinner tables. Right here in our own back yard are opportunities to not only make an imprint on the needy around us but even greater a chance to mentor and disciple the weak and weary.

As often as the sun drops over the horizon, there is an opportunity to give and take right here, right now. A chance to learn from ‘them’ and grow together, a chance to give all we do not deserve to those who may or may not look just like you.

If we gotta start somewhere… why not HERE- why not NOW? Which city has God placed you for this time and season and how are you gonna START here and now?

Alone with God

For some you choose a book in bed, zoning out to a reality show, tall glass of wine, cookie dough straight from the bowl, … As for me, I prefer rest, relaxation and time alone with God in the cloak of the night while soaking in a hot tub.

I’m very partial to a cold night submerged into a 104 degree tub allowing my middling whispers a chance to skip off the water and soar into the ears of God Almighty. Seldom am I lacking for words, and neither is He. I talk He listens. He talks I attempt to listen while His still small voice guides me with ease. Tonight was the third night this week that He sent an additional falling star as means of reminding me I serve the Living God. Not only one who created me, but also one who interacts with me. One who enjoys to surprise me. One who whispers in my ear and tells me to “Wait. Be Patient. Trust Me. Let Go Keisha, I’ve got this.” One who cheers me on and provides the power to face tomorrow. One who imparts peace, which triumphs over my fear. One who removes my shame as far as the east is from the west. One who loves me and declares to me, "nothing I do can EARN, DESTROY, LENGTHEN, SHORTEN, or CHANGE the LOVE GOD has for me. No matter what He is on my side."

He longs for YOU to accept the same words...

By now you have come to learn my passion for Midwifery and the desire to someday practice as a midwife among the developing lands I take Jesus to.

Although this passion has been brewing for many years, it has been difficult to locate "High Risk" training facilities. Here in the states, a midwife dials 9-1-1 when a mother becomes “High Risk” therefore extensive ‘high risk’ training of is not necessary.

As I near another escape visit back ‘home’ to Zambia it is my wish to job shadow a few native and Western Midwives in Zambia. Although my Q/A sessions will take place among the largest cities in the country it should still provide ample insight as to what the next step on the horizon is for my education in pursuit of helping the multitude who die during childbirth each and every minute according to WHO. “Every minute, at least one woman dies from complications related to pregnancy or childbirth – that means 529 000 women a year. In addition, for every woman who dies in childbirth, around 20 more suffer injury, infection or disease – approximately 10 million women each year.”

This is another reason WHY… I yearn to be used by God to help these ladies in times of courage and fear. I long to pray over each woman. I aspire to cheer each lady on as they bring forth life that God has breathed. In unfortunate times, I will devote myself to the women through the hardship and loss of their own flesh and blood. We’ll mourn the loss together. We’ll cry out to God for Peace. We’ll forever be changed.

So why start in Zambia? Why give myself to the nation I have come so proud to be a part of?...

According to a recent BBC Report READ THIS article from BBC.com

** “Zambia has one of the world's fastest growing populations.”

** The United Teaching Hospital (UTH) in Lusaka deliver at least 50 babies a day - sometimes 70 or more. The pressure on the maternity unit is significant

**The population is expanding rapidly, especially in the capital where people are moving for jobs. The demand for maternity services is rising each year but that is not matched by the increase in space or resources.

- ** Half of Zambia's population is aged 16 or under

** Women in Zambia have, on average, six children. That number has barely shifted in recent decades.

Anna Sampa from UNICEF explained the reason for desiring so many mouths to feed with so little food to feed them. “"They don't see the potential burden of having more mouths to feed. Rather they look on lots of children as a means of helping them in their old age."

I can attest that children become their Social Security, Welfare and Retirement solutions. From what I have learned, Africans bank of the reality that multiple children will die before reaching adulthood, so they need a few more to help carry the weight of themselves (parents) in old age. More Children are a sign of wealth as they are provide more hands for planting and harvesting and making a larger profit, if all goes well.

The UN predicts that Zambia's growing population is now at 13 million and projected to triple by 2050.

Going Through the Motions

God as MY Home.

Moses knew this. "Lord," he prayed, Psalms 90:1 "you have been our home since the beginning." What a powerful thought: God as MY HOME.

We all know home is the place where you can kick off your shoes, eat cookies in bed and not worry about what people think when they see you in your bathrobe and hair in a towel.

Home is familiar to you. No one has to tell you how to locate your kitchen... and I am finding God equally familiar to me. I have learned who to run to for nourishment, where to hide for protection, where to turn for guidance. As our homes are a place of refuge from the storm, God's house is a place of peace.

The battle continues to rage within as I consider "home" two clashing hemispheres, cultures, and countries.

During my adolescent years, I only knew one culture as my comfort zone, yet as days turn into weeks, I am feeling more out of place among the very people group I was born in. One would say, “I have lost that love’n feeling” for the American expectations or ideals that are placed on the shoulder of each child. I no longer need to; change my entire outfit with the rising of the sun, wear make-up to feel adorn, hoard an entire closet for a private shoe collection, or lease the latest dream vehicle. I am simply going through the motions here and doing my best to prop up a smile and pretend I still care.

Do not get me wrong. I by no means am claiming that I have fully accepted Africa by culture. Nope I am still an outsider among them as well, just less of one. I have simply gained more appreciation for the culture as a whole. I respect their transparency among their peers and willingness to put others before themselves, even when there is only one morsel remaining in the pot. They are ambitious to learn from others, instead of thinking ‘they’ are the answer to a rising circumstance. Humility goes a long way and I have found much freedom in the simple life.

So here, I remain stuck between two cultures uniquely me. I am thanking Jesus that he is not only my homeboy, but also my home, my safe haven and place of peace in the midst of this storm.

I shared this poem preciously, yet it continues speaking volumes even now on my behalf.

Restoration has paid a visit. My deepest stain now clean. Relentless has become my theme, like King David God has immersed me in His grace making me white as snow.

At times I have struggled with telling ‘my story’ and using the word “missionary” when asked why I have spent time in Africa. I had come to believe the lies Satan was feeding me. How could I be a missionary and choose such Sin? I wasn’t worthy of such a title. Missionaries help show the world around them that Christ followers are not to be chronic hypocrites.

I resorted to saying, “I’m a volunteer for Christian Non-Government Organizations”, and surely they would hear “Christian” and assume my purpose is not my own but rather living a life to bring Glory and Honor to Jesus Christ. Lesson learned. I used the same response recently when a new client questioned the International photos plastering my office. She claims the JW religion and continued reminding me of the great work their missionaries where doing in Africa and beyond. My hopeful assumption that she’d place me as a missionary was lost and nowhere to be found.

“God do you still view me a missionary for You?” “Is it possible to tarnish the name of Christianity to greater depths?”

Jeremiah 1:5 came to mind and it was settled. "I knew you before I formed you in your mother's womb. Before you were born I set you apart and appointed you as my prophet to the nations." He called me just as he called Abraham, Moses, David… and He has appointed me as a prophet to the Nations to share His Love in word in deed. No matter the ‘good I’m able to accomplish with His help, I’m still a sinner saved by Grace. Nothing is impossible with my great Lord and Savior and once more He has made Beauty from Ashes.

Sin has lost its power.

Death has lost its sting.

OUT of darkness.

Year in Review

A brief Year in Review... Oct 2010- October 2011

Following a natural miscarriage in October of last year life became foggy and very unsettled. I craved cultural closure with Mwenya (the father) and his family back in Zambia. But as the days marched on my sanity was losing ground. I proceeded to put one foot before the other, yet my desire was to reach “home/Africa” and lay this ‘trial in life’ to rest once and for all.

Midwifery in developing lands is an idea that continues to drive me so I applied for “high risk” midwifery training in January 2011. Upon acceptance, I packed in a flash and was ready to embark on a new journey with a worldwide Christian Missions Organization YWAM [Youth with a Mission]. That is until I heard a still small voice calling me to remain in Ohio and help see my father and his declining health through a tough season, winter.

Lack of finances pushed me to sign a one year rent agreement in February 2011 for yet another official massage business. RENEWAL massage with a tag line, a natural way to mend the body was born and has a Tax I.D. Clientele is slow to steady but with this economy I be grateful those whom schedule.

June 2011 finally presented an opportunity for a return visit to Zambia (Thanks to Dan’s flyer miles.) Seventeen days flew by at the speed of light, but the closure and clarity in my spirit is priceless. I am still healing from the death of our potential marriage which was hard to swallow, but God’s peace has washed over me and I respect Mwenya for saying “goodbye” and following his heart, rather than holding on for the ‘wrong motives’ to a western fiance. Love is a risk I have come to learn and I will risk it once more despite the pain and heartache of this past year.

Currently the blood of Jesus is touching my father and healing him following an eleven-year battle of Primary Progressive MS. A young African profit spoke over dad’s life during my time in Zambia last month and sure enough, “The hour has come for Jesus to heal him and show Himself in this medical miracle.” Indeed, we give all the glory to God.

If progress continues at this rate and I see dad and mom are stable, I will exit America, move home once again, and continue volunteering for Christian NGO’s in Zambia where my heart continues to beat to an African drum ;) However, “I will not worry about tomorrow, for today has enough troubles of its own.”

I look forward to my feet and heart dancing together in step for three weeks during a visit to Zambia next month. I'm going HOME!

"Thank You" to the Crochet Team from Living Word Church and OTHERS!

Would you say the word “sun-hat” or “head-sock” come to mind when you think of Africa? Believe it or not, Zambia has “cold season” and even in Africa we embrace the coziness of head socks from the months of May to September.

“Cold season” brings chilling 40 Fahrenheit /5 celecuis nights. And I’m here to tell ya’ll that is frigid when you are slumbering on ground in a home/shelter with zero heat or insulation. In fact my recent (June – July 2011) visit had me wearing four to five layers of clothing under three blankets just to maintain warmth night after night.

Going into this past trip, I knew what to anticipate as I have learned the highs and lows of cold and hot season. So early on I began to rally the troops seeking gently used or new head socks for the multitude of Zambians who would be facing cold season by my side.

James 1:27 "Religion that is pure and undefiled before God, the is this: to visit the orphans and widows in their affliction..."

At times the burdens of their afflictions are too much. Leaving me hopeless and helpless as I gaze into their weary eyes. How can I make a difference for them or create them into a masterpiece of their own?

...Then I am reminded... Jesus will complete the work in the lives of these widows... through me... as a simple tool in the hands of the Master... just as these widows are learning to be the master of a crochet hook to create masterpieces of their own.

Psalm 23:3 " He leads me in the paths of righteousness for His name's sake."

I wish I could make their lives new again, but I can't.

I wish I could wipe away their tears and heartache, but I can't.

I wish I could restore their hope, but I can't.

But JESUS can. "He restores my soul." He doesn't reform, he restores. The Master Builder will pull out the blueprints to these widows lives and restore them once more.

Through out my recent trip (July 2011) I provided Micro-loans to widows near Kitwe, Zambia. In return they created 40 new hand bags which I brought back stateside to sell. With the money each one earned, they are able to create new masterpieces with fabric, thread, an their treadle machines to sell for a profit and put food on the table for their children.

Today, prior to Crochet class the widows took the bull by the horns and created this opportunity to share the one thing that administers eternal life, hope, peace, joy and a light inside each of ‘us’ which can’t be hidden.

Time was not with us, yet PRAYER and SCRIPTURE READING would not be placed on the back burner. Rather, ‘their’ desire for Jesus was blazing and their desire to give Jesus the Glory shone from within.

Forgive me for the delay in posting this please.

While my faith was put into action during the divine appointment with Mrs. Graham, my faith was stretched all the further during my recent trip 'home' to Zambia. Yes, I mean home. No matter the years which have passed me by, the diseases I encounter, the thousands of miles in between my biological family and myself, God continues to give me a heart for the widows and the diseased in developing lands, and Zambia continues to rank #1.

The term “Widow” is not a common term among the American culture. Of the few, who are widowed, many end up remarried and embracing the joys life has to offer once more. However, in Zambia widows are a dime a dozen. They line the ankle spraining makeshift sidewalks in Kitwe. They tug the hem of your shirt in the corridor in-between two main streets with their children begging for money, as most are blind. They have every reason to lose hope, yet somehow they cover the floors and pews in many churches as most of their cups run over with faith, hope and love.

Let me introduce you to a few that I had the privilege of teaching a new vocational skill involving plastic bags (which we find by the hundreds in Zambia).

Here are just a few of my fellow friends from a nearby Shanty compound, Kapoto. They live a walking distance from me and yet we live such polar opposite lives. I wish I could defend each one and make them a queen within the limits of their own worlds, however, with God by their side and a new skill in hand I believe by the power of God’s mighty hand that they will rise from rags to riches, if only in the sight of Jesus Christ. After all, we read in PROVERBS 15:25 The LORD tears down the proud man's house but he keeps the widow's boundaries intact. Amen!

Dream a Dream... a Princess Dream [Part I]

Who could dream that pillowcases were created for more than sleep, rather for the transformation into lovely dresses for tiny-tots all around the world?

My sister introduced the idea to my mother… and the rest is history. Mom joined the ‘Pillowcase-Dress Club’ and began snipping, stitching and hemming pillowcases until they were re-created into beautiful sun dresses for tiny-tots of girls here, there and everywhere.

We have been eying the thrift stores and grabbing all the pillowcases we can. As if that weren’t enough mom decided to add some ruffles, buttons and rick-rack to dress them up just a bit in hopes that the new owner would feel like a princess.

…Coming to learn of my ‘current’ trip back ‘home’ to Zambia, I put in an order and mom delivered. Among the plethora of girls I dream of finding along the dusty paths of Zambia, there are a select group and they are the very girls I hope will be proudly sporting each handcrafted dress.

Is it not every girls dream to look pretty in pink and dream a fairytale ending to your own day? Even more I dream of the look upon their faces when they are gifted a new princess dress all for the keeping as I continue to pray the Lord Jesus will watch them and protect them down their own fairytale path.

Near and far my dear friends Mr. and Mrs. Kabwata have shared the affection, distress, devotion, eagerness, and sentiment for the ‘least of these’ in Zambia, Africa.

Eric and I helped lead a team of eighteen Zambian youth through a Zambian Teen Missions Boot Camp from November 2008 into January 2009. We were knows as Team CHIWALA . Our homes and daily comforts we left behind for leaky tents, ice-cold bucket baths, critters in our beds, early wake up whistles, little to no free time and deadly illnesses that come with “Rainy/Monsoon season” in Zambia. Highs and lows were a given considering a group of 23 people in the ‘bush’ of Africa living and working together. However, with Jesus at the helm we trekked on and continued to seek Him for wisdom, health, strength, patience and cultural barriers to be broken. Imagine surrendering life’s simple pleasure for numerous years during Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Years as Eric done. Eric, like David is a man after God’s own heart.

Jillian another Ohio- Midwest native and I met while at the International Headquarters of Teen Missions in Florida late 2008. Once accomplishing a portion of her BMW course, she embarked on a journey to complete her Internship in Zambia Teen Missions. There she oversaw the MSSM program while sacrificing and living the majority of her time in the ‘bush’ with no electric or indoor plumbing. However, during her stay the people, culture and Eric stole a piece of her heart, as God would have it. She has served in Zambia for nearly 3 years (full time) and like me considers it ‘home’ in many ways. Her patience with the culture, endurance to live outside of her ‘comfort zone’ and willingness to say, “Here am I Lord send me.” … far away from family, childhood friends, comfy bed and the like speaks volumes for her willingness to TRUST and OBEY for there Is NO other way. My respect for Jillian only grows as time passes and I see the Character of God shine brighter and brighter from the inside out.

Jillian drove this beast all over the states for MSSM. That is DEVOTION

Together Eric, Jillian and I enjoyed time of fun, food, and fellowship during their wedding in Ohio and hosting them to speak on behalf of Teen Missions just some weeks back. It became a time of refreshment, and sharing our hearts, which seem to beat to the same ol’ African drum.

For the LOVE of BAG Ladies [Part I ]

Divine appointments are where my faith is found and meeting Mrs.G at bible study some months back proved my faith all the more.

Mrs. Graham had a dream and that dream is something we share; using ordinary plastic bags to create jobs, bedding, and so much more for the less fortunate in our world. She heard of the idea on the radio, I heard about it through the grapevine. The idea is this, crocheting ordinary plastic bags into pillows, beds, water bottle holders, market bags, soap sponges, clothes pin holders and more. However, our common ground does not stop there. When given the idea to learn, neither of us knew how to crochet.

Times have changed. Mrs. Graham not only taught me how to crochet but helped expand my own vision for teaching the widows and orphans of Africa so they could sell their ‘goods’ within their own communities and villages as a way to make a living. She even sent some sleeping mats to a Guatemala dump where the less fortunate call ‘home’.

Week after week, I attended personal one-on-one lessons with Mrs. Graham. Patience, Practice, and Mistakes were a part of my every lesson.

Moreover, the hunt began. I told clients, neighbors, family and friends that I needed to collect ordinary plastic bags for the hopes of taking them to Africa (June 21, 2011). My desire to pass my mad ‘plarn’ skills onto the next generation of plastic crochet art began. Bags trickled in at first and then the spark took hold and the fire began blazing. Next thing I knew, I was the ‘bag lady’ and collected THOUSANDS of bags in a matter of a month, thanks to the participation of locals and even a shipment from California.

Bag after bag became flattened, sorted, and packed in my luggage headed for Africa this very week. Not all the bags will make the journey to Africa; some will remain state side to be recycled and crafted into more sleeping mats and pillows where eventually they will be placed in the hands of less fortunate in our own state of Ohio and anywhere the Good Lord may lead the bag ladies and their Recycled Plastic Art.

Wish I may – Wish I might…

Fortune telling has never interested me. I can hardly remember a time I have read an ‘Aquarius’ horoscope, and “Luck” has never pulled me into its grips. Although my mom is able to cross her fingers and toes, we have never been a family that crosses our fingers (or toes) in hopes of a better outcome.

Our foundation growing up was firm, built on solid ground...

Luke 6:48 "He is like a man building a house, who dug down deep and laid the foundation on rock. When a flood came, the torrent struck that house but could not shake it, because it was well built..

Our family placed faith in our Savior Jesus, Sovereign God and Holy Spirit to guide our steps...

Isaiah 30:21 And your ears shall hear a word behind you, saying, This is the way, walk in it,” when you turn to the right or when you turn to the left.

However, somehow I found myself this very night gazing into the cloudless night sky and setting my eyes upon the ‘first star’. As though I were following the pattern of a nightly ritual my mind and mouth began to murmur the ol’ saying, “Star light, star bright – first star I see tonight – wish I may –wish I might- have this WISH – I wish tonight.” It did not stop there. Thoughts and emotions provoked me to continue in this ‘dreamy’ state while being carried away with my ‘wishes’ and thoughts of my previous prayers just moments before. Tears began to well up in my eyes (nothing new for me). Then my ‘WISH’ carried me away into a picture perfect world for a moment’s time.

While I prepare once more for another departure ‘home’ in a matter of days, I find myself consumed with fervent prayers, daydreams of who I will see and what response I will get, the numerous funerals I have missed, and counting the heads of ‘more’ street children who add to the already outlandish numbers. Courage is something I crave so I can face the facts and effects from the past year of ‘public mistakes’ that still manages to haunt me at times. Yet peace surpasses my understanding as I prepare for the ‘unknown’ in a Nation I call home, Zambia.

Many may predict my ‘starry wish’ based around a man I love and began a family with just one year ago today. However, I have come to respect Mwenya’s choice of going our separate ways and leaving the past behind us, not before us. Others may conclude my ‘wish’ to revolve around the countless orphaned children I smother in affection and devoted attention day in and day out. Still some assume my greatest ‘wish’ is to head home for the last time to Africa where my heart continues beating to the native drums in villages near and far.

Nevertheless, my ‘starry wish’ was simply regarding my African mother, Agnos. Codependence could be an understatement (at times), adoration overflows; love is nothing more than unconditional while our kinship goes to the moon and back. She introduces me as her ‘first born’ to all, while I thoughtlessly call out “Ba Mayo- My Mom” day or night. Skin color, culture, language, and customs never come between us. Like my own biological mother, our ties are inseparable.

Agnos is a widow for the second time, mother of six (seven including me), but only three children are in her care for lack of finances. Nonetheless, her determination and dependence on Christ Jesus never skips a beat. A bible verse I pray over her is:

Isaiah 30:18 " Therefore the LORD longs to be gracious to you, And therefore He waits on high to have compassion on you. For the LORD is a God of justice; How blessed are all those who long for Him.

Constantly I gain respect with each passing year as I witness the trails she faces with Jesus hand in hand along with habitual 4AM prayers to God our Father which last for hours.

Due to lack of finances and her instability, our communication has reached its limits and fallen off a cliff many months back. She assumes I am currently holding ‘her’ first three-month-old grandchild in my arms. I on the other hand fear for her health and the safety of my ‘siblings’ during this time apart. If God were to grow, weary from hearing the same ol’ prayer it would be mine for “BaMayo”. Anytime I witness a digital clock read “1:11 or 2:22 or 3:33 or 4:44 or 5:55 10:10 or 11:11 or 12:12 AM or PM” My heart cries out additional prayers for my dear sweet African mother, friend and confidant.

Limitless starry nights have passed by leaving me wish-less, however tonight I couldn’t contain the burden within to find Agnos , Kenny, Tindie, and TiTi tucked safely into their village upon my arrival in the week to come.

To some this photo doesn't seem like God is taking proper care of the 'owner'. I recon "proper care" is relative to different people and cultures. If you could speak to the owner of this shelter you would come to know that it serves as a shelter as well as a means of business. They were able to sell goods and make a living as many do in Africa- bit by bit.
Yet they are thankful that God is FOR them. WITH them. UNDER them. UPHOLDING them. AROUND them. WATCHING OVER them.

Philipians 4:19 And this same God who takes care of me will supply all your needs from his glorious riches, which have been given to us in Christ Jesus.

It may not 'feel' or 'look' like God has taken care of 'me' over the past year, however, I know better. I realize that my GOD flights for me when I draw near to Him.

for the "Barefoot Walk 2011 as we collected shoes for Teen Missions -Aids Orphans, who's vision was to collect 5,000 pairs of shoes for the orphans of the AIDS epidemic in Africa.

"Worldwide, there are an estimated 16 million AIDS Orphans. Of that number, 11.6 million live in sub-saharan Africa (that’s over 77%). The vision and goal of AOSC -(Aids Orphans & Street Children) is to provide for children whose parents have died of the HIV/AIDS virus, and children or widows who do not have a sustaining family."

Bedding and Socks Collected

Next on the list was the combined effort to collect socks and bedding for a local Dayton organization and homeless shelter St. Vincent de Paul Gateway Shelters , where I volunteer monthly. The outpouring of love and generosity has been above and beyond my wildest expectations.

"St. Vincent de Paul operates two 24/7 Gateway Shelters, the 220-bed St. Vincent de Paul Gateway for Women & Families and the 178-bed Gettysburg Gateway for Men. The Gettysburg location also offers 60 sleeping mats for extra capacity when needed. "

A few have even donated furniture for the Refugee Program on Dayton through

Catholic Social Services, where I volunteer on a weekly/monthly basis.

Chaos cut loose here on Rangeline Road today, but only a moment. Sunday May 8th served as the annual day of celebrating Motherhood here in the states where we are oh so original and call it “Mothers Day”.

Moments before my attempt to wake sleeping beauty (mother of Marlee)for church, our ‘new’ puppy Lucile-Louise had me chasing her down in my pajamas for all the neighbors to see all the while attempting to toast noodles and sliced almonds (for lunch) that ‘burnt’ during the hunt for Lucile. Then the phone rang. I only answer it assuming that my farther (who is out of town) had an emergency and needed to chat. Hasty I say “Hello?”…. “Hello dad are you there?”

“Keisha, can you hear me?” We finally connect and he follows, “HAPPY MOTHER’S DAY TO YOU!” Still caught up in the hustle and bustle of my burnt almonds and hot waffle iron I told him I would call him back.

Eventually catching my breath and taking a moment to process my father’s “Happy Mother’s Day” greeting.

HUMBLED BY MOTHERHOOD…

Sure my tiny Baunda Robert-Eugene was life less by the time I held him in my hands, never the less one thing remains, I am a mother and humbled at the thought.

OVERTAKEN BY PEACE…

Despite the reasons to fear and tremble at the premature death of my son as well as with the death of a relationship and hopeful marriage to Mwenya a man I whom I love, God has given abounding peace that truly surpasses all understanding.

IMMOVABLE...

Only God has the power to give and take away life. Which leaves me motionless like that of a stuffed animal when I think of the grandeur of our LORD and His miracle of birth all over this globe day in and day out. Because of this miracle mothers experience the gift of LIFE inside their womb and many experience life outside the womb.

It was their desire to compile photos from their own relief efforts in Africa along with mine and create a few promo videos for their upcoming event "Wheels for Wells".

Wheels for Wells is an event where 60 bike riders will ride over 300 miles from North Carolina to New Jersey- USA ...
in effort to fight for the clean water crisis in Africa.

RENEWAL massage-is born

Long overdue, I know. I realize that I am in America where I have twenty-four hours and seven days a week to utilize quality electricity, wireless internet, and my own laptop. However, my agenda and priorities have taken a turn in the past few months, so blogging and face book has been on the back burner as if you didn’t already notice.

However, a promise is a promise and the time has come to reveal the final selection to a previous post (read here) where YOU voted on which of my photos to use in my newest business venture.

My goal was to bridge the gap between CULTURE, EXPERIENCES and PEOPLE, which go beyond the walls of each of my clients and then place it in reach for each one of them to behold. I desired them to relate, connect, and associate with my passion for developing lands and people groups and present pictures which tell stories all for themselves and provide an opportunity to ponder the over abundance in ‘America’ and the fight for survival which the majority of the world face daily.

The photo selection took days upon days, and endless hours review. The votes you cast nearly became absolute before I discovered a few of the ‘top picks’ where unable to be enlarged beyond a 4”x6”. Having the privilege to backpack through twenty-eight countries within the past nine years the narrowing of thousands of photos became much too great. Moreover, the hunt continued.

It was time to be true to myself and choose, that which beacons my own heart, children and widows. Invariably the grimy unwanted children and widows too frail and weak to notice are the very souls that draw me in. They are the spirits that lift me and keep my heart a dancing. These four women represent so much to me as they are the driving force in each of their own cultures.

From there I realized water is the very source of ‘life’ here on American soil, cities in Europe, jungles of Laos or the bush of Ethiopia. No matter where we make our dot on the map, water is imperative. Finally, I choose children who are hunting, searching and desperate for water to drink, bath, cook, wash clothes, and even water crops with.

Lastly, I recalled the many who have committed on my willingness to live in mud-brick homes just tall enough to stand up in. Homes where roofs leak during monsoon season and rats are a common sight, even in my bed. Electricity and pluming are only in my dreams while cockroaches too large to imagine overtake my community outhouse on a daily basis. Again, the choice became easier; why not exhibit housing structures within the boundaries of Africa itself?

Eleven years prior, I passed the Ohio State Board of Medical Massage Test that proved me an L.M.T. (Licensed Massage Therapist). I continued with further massage education in California and Thailand. A dream for many years had finally happened. Such joy tends to overflow when your job is a ‘passion’ that drives you daily. To know that each person you encounter will depart feeling ‘RENEWED’ while bidding farewell to their physical, emotional or even mental aches they came with.

Annnnnnnnnnnnd, here I am yet again working for myself and using my God given talent by way of Massage Therapy. I trust Jesus to arrange my clients and provide the means to live and the chance to support (financially) fellow missionary friends who continue the labor of sharing Jesus in word and deed with those I have left behind around the world.

I too strive to share and show others the way to Eternal Life and Freedom in Jesus Christ and provide a chance to ASK, SEEK and KNOCK at the door of Jesus with my own clients and those I encounter.

This storms a movin'

Today is a bit of a stormy day, yet I believe God makes ALL things beautiful with time ...and this storm is movin on out.

February 22, 2011 would have been my due date had our tiny boy made this far. I cannot forget the first time I located a working computer with Internet in Zambia and entered the dates needed for a calculated/computerized due date. As Internet connections are a not up to speed in Kitwe, Zambia it seemed excessively long before “February 22, 2011” appeared on the computer screen and reflected on the whites of my eyes. My heart skipped a beat. My face became expressionless, as it seemed to sink in all the more… “I am a mama and our child is growing within.” The clock began ticking slower that day as February felt like a world away.

And here I sit an empty womb (read here), and a void in my heart, half way around the world and too far for the Mwneya, the father to wrap his manly hands around me and tell me once more “ni nkutemwa” (I LOVE YOU).

Sigh!

A verse that I often stand on an proclaim is Ecclesiastes 3, verses 1- 11

There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under heaven:

a time to be born and a time to die,

a time to plant and a time to uproot,

a time to kill and a time to heal,

a time to tear down and a time to build,

a time to weep and a time to laugh,

a time to mourn and a time to dance,

a time to scatter stones and a time to gather them,

a time to embrace and a time to refrain,

a time to search and a time to give up,

a time to keep and a time to throw away,

a time to tear and a time to mend,

a time to be silent and a time to speak,

a time to love and a time to hate,

…. He has made everything beautiful in its time.

So I rest under the umbrella that Shelter of the Most High has provided me on this 'rainy day' and I believe that He has made EVERYTHING BEAUTIFUL!

FEAR NOT

I am the LORD your God, who holds your right hand, and I tell you,
"DO NOT BE AFRAID. I will help you."

Could you use some courage? Are you backing down more than you are standing up? Jesus scattered the butterflies out of the stomachs of his nervous disciples...

We need to remember that the disciples were common men given a compelling task. Before they were the stained-glassed saints in the windows of cathedrals, they were somebody's next-door-neighbors trying to make a living and raise a family. They weren't cut from theological cloth or raised on supernatural milk. But they were an ounce more devoted than they were afraid and, as a result, did some extraordinary things.

Earthly fears are no fears at all. Answer the big question of eternity, and the little questions of life fall into perspective. - The Applause of Heaven, Max Lucado

Jesus tells us "FEAR NOT" 366 times--one for each day of the year (leap years included). God knew we would face challenges and reasons for our flesh to cling to fear but he promises that our Trust in Him is enough and He will see us through our trouble times.

This past year has given me more reasons than usual to “fear” and therefore I have had to cling harder than ever to the hand of Jesus and allow Him to carry me through these rough times in life. I have learned to accept that my family and closest friends no longer understand the deepest ideas and issues I face regarding another culture that I embrace. And I cannot expect them to relate. God is the one who has taken my heart to Africa throughout the years and He is the very one who can give me Joy and comfort in the midst of rough waters. He is all I need and all I have these days. With Him, there is no confusion, misunderstandings or lack of interest. He is the very one who hears my cries in the night and the burdens on my heart by day. He walks and talks with me along the path and continues to guide and direct me each day in peace as the ‘still small voice’ beacons.

Trust and Obey

Some of you may be familiar with an old hymn “Trust and obey -for there is no other way.” Despite my deliberate disobedience to the Lords desire of purity months past, (read here) I have re discovered the importance of obedience when the Lord beacons. There are times when understanding ‘can wait’, but obedience cannot.

It started twelve years ago as I began to jet set into developing nations. In little to no time, the needs of countless women suffering from childbirth imprinted itself on the forefront of my mind leaving a mark to this very day. As time passed and developing nations woke me from a deep sleep I pursued a heart for Midwifery and completed a Doula training some years back with hopes of lending a hand to the sea of faces dying in childbirth each and every day.

My anticipation this past year in Zambia Africa was to job shadow the few western midwives living there and join in their efforts to spare the lives of suffering woman and children. I owe my own mother many thanks as a Registered Nurse in the O.B. for seventeen years who paved the way for me. She supplied medical scissors; hemostats’, stethoscope, and a blood pressure cuff which are a part of the personal items I left in storage upon my departure from Zambia this past year.

Preceding the death of my unborn baby boy in October 2010 (read hear), my heart began to stir frequently for the women in need. However, I was torn. Do I run back to Zambia in hopes of marriage to Mwenya or do I further my biblical and medical training to pursue the path of Midwifery -first? I had to be very honest with myself and put my ‘emotions’ on the back burner. The real reason I moved to Africa in the first place was to be the hands and feet of Jesus Christ and share the freedom in Salvation to those who do not know Him. Back to the prayer closest I ran. I prayed and waited for the still small voice until the Holy Spirit began to play tug- a- war with me. Finally, I rose to wave a white flag of surrender and agreed that medical training would not only influence the lives of those I encountered but also give greater opportunity to share Jesus' love and truth for years to come in the land I may call home. Marriage to Mwneya would be put on hold.

The search began for the proper Midwifery School. I understood the courses here in the states would not suffice as my own mid-wife reminded me I would need ‘high risk’ training for the lack of medical outlets in the developing counties I plan to practice in. Lastly, I narrowed my options down to a few distinct International Christian Midwifery /Biblical training schools and I applied. Following a hectic and seamless application process, I was accepted in a down to the wire time line. At last, my dream was unfolding before my very eyes. I felt as if I had purpose and meaning once again following the loss of my own son which allowed me to put ‘love for his father’ on hold and pursue an opportunity that could help other women survive to see God breathe life into their own children’s lungs and a journey of motherhood unfold. The excitement and anticipations for this two-year training helped numb the pain that Mwenya and I were parting ways for a time and season. I knew culturally that my choice would possibly cause more issues than I could handle and possibly divide us forever. However, I accepted that God held our future, whether together or apart and I needed to trust Jesus to the end no matter the result. Now was the time to TRUST and OBEY… for there is no other way.

With only moment left before purchasing a flight that would sweep me off to another continent in a matter of hours, I hesitated. Why you may ask? Only God knows. My bags were packed. Sunscreen purchased in bulk. Beneficiaries’ chosen. Medical bills miraculously paid. International drivers license in hand. Loose ends tied up. I even changed the “Life Summary and Prayer Requests” on this very blog as I did not think anything could hold me back at this point. (I wonder if anyone logged on and read my summary during those wee hours of the morning last month?)

WRONG. I was wrong. I found myself kneeling at our couch with tears streaming down my face asking God to speak clearer to me. I needed to know why I felt such cold feet in the last possible seconds. I could nearly taste the new cuisine, feel the sunshine beaming on my face and bask in the biblical training courses that would swallow me up over the upcoming two years helping restore the past year of life’s trails. So WHY must I doubt that I should go. Miracles took me thus far in the process, so why would I turn down my own dream at this point in the ball game?

Through out the wee hours of the morning my papa, mama and myself talked, prayed and cried together. You see my parents have been my best friends for years, honestly. When some would never dare move ‘home’ at the age of thirty to live with their mom and dad, I find it a blessing to have them by my side. They know my strengths, weaknesses’ and even my annoying habits and love me all the same. I too accept them for who they are and bask in the love they give me as I heal from the toughest year ever lived. I still need them and I believe they too need me. My father has fought a hard battle with Primary Progressive Multiple Sclerosis for the past eleven years and the battle is beginning to overtake him bit by bit. Mama has fought her own enduring battle following extensive surgeries over the past few years. So it is, the hesitation I felt deep within my soul was the Lord calling me to “Trust and Obey” and the peace that He provided me assurance that I was to bloom a little longer where I have been planted here on Rangeline Road. I have declined the Medical and Biblical Schooling for now, and will remain in the presence of my parents as we help one another through this next year of life one day at a time.
